I have 2GB Ram and rarely get disk activity on Star Wars Galaxies
RAM helps a lot. Flash Ram is cheaper and nonvolitile, but slower, but the newer stuff competes with IDE drives for performance.

Hybrid drives help a lot with business people and to a lesser extent, gamers.

Read intensive applications like movies won't be helped much I don't think. Neither will P2P file sharing, graphics work, download assimilation (web or P2P), or even web browsing (lot of reads).
