Intel played a helping hand to AMD's success!
"...Barred by a legal agreement from using the same bus as Intel on its K7 chips ...AMD created the Athlon"

Basically, Intel was helpful in guiding AMD to be creative and become profitable (at least try to).
I read the agreement and it states the following very clearly, word for word "AMD hereby agrees to stop copying Intel designs, stop Intel dumpster diving for technology and find own crap to push, here to forth".
This has very clearly been a beneficial contract by Intel that has helped AMD.
