Good Points - But not what I thought this article was about
Trojan Horse - History of the HMO - Same difference.
I have been around long enough to know first hand the evolution of the Health Care Insurance Industry - And you are partly correct - The insurance companies did take over because the physicians let them. And because patients let them. And because those who buy insurance let them. And because drugs cost too much and technolgy costs a fortune.
I am a family doc in a small town. I'm not rich. Unlike the insurance companies - I am available 24/7, I take full liability and responsibility for all of my decisions, and if I patient of mine needs care, they get it. I get paid much less than you apparently think I do. I completely understand that I am fortunate and I am grateful to be in the profession I am in.
But that's not what I was addressing - That amazon.com (a bookstore) and your physician is seen in the same universe when it comes to information exchange as apparently the CEO of a HUGE technology company does is rather frightening - don't you think?
Who, ultimately do we trust with our personal information and health decisions - our physicians and nurses and other licensed professionals - or - business suits in distant glass office buildings keeping track of every office visit, every diagnosis, every prescription and making yea or nay decisions on the tests your doctor feels necessary or the prescriptions you need - who are completely indemnified despite no formal medical training - who ultimately may answer to a stockholder, not you.
If you are my patient, I am as likely to see you at my kids soccer game, the boy scout meeting or the grocery store as I am my office - that is accountability you live with as a family doctor in a small town - and I love it.
