While you're right that connection speed IS the most important factor, many sites include Java and other embedded apps. A faster CPU and more memory DO help these things open faster.

As for the games (like Doom3), I am TIRED of people saying that it's "all in the video card". You're right again in the importance of the CPU (and system memory) in high-end gaming. My Doom3 framerates went up from 30 to 40 with just a CPU upgrade from a 1600 to a 2600 CPU.

You mentioned image editing, but not video editing. People editing their digital video camera footage, will see a gain in a faster CPU.
