CPUs are already fast enough...
Modern CPUs are more than capable of handling normal computing tasks. The big bottlneck in a modern PC is the hard drive and that's not getting any faster as the years go by.

The people who need more power are the gamers and people who encode video, etc. Both these tasks can be parallelized nicely so those people would be better off with multiple CPUs rather than faster ones.

What we really need from Intel right now is cooler chips with multiple cores so we can build quieter, more powerful PCs.

I'd swap my 4GHz P4 for a dual-core Pentium-M right now (if only I could!)
