Think about it!!!!
Year 1991; Apple, IBM, Motorola got together (AIM Alliance) to pave way for a new CPU. PowerPC!!!
Apple contribution: SW, (OOP)
IBM contribution: POWER1 and $$$
Motorola: $$ and manufacture

First true PowerPC CPU is named PowerPC 601

Apple release first Mac based on PowerPC 601 (1994)
IBM release first RS/6000 based on PowerPC 601 (1994)

# PowerPC G3 (1997)
# 7400 PowerPC G4 (1999)

.- Itanium's first version, code named Merced, shipped in June 2001

.- Itanium II introduced in July 2002

# 970 (PowerPC G5) (2003)

With this time line the point that I want to make is, 10 years went by and 4 major upgrades (I do not consider clock speed as major upgrade) to have the capabilities and stamina that PowerPC enjoy today. Itanium is only 4 year old processor roughly running it second major upgrade Itanium II. For those who kill already Itanium, please let me know how to shortcut 6 years of R&D?
