Middle ground
"As a matter of fact, DEC had devised a more solid transition plan from their VAX CISC to the Alpha RISC. But they failed and DEC closed down."

The Alpha chip was/is a marvel. DEC TOTALLY messed up on its intro! They said that Alpha was the future, but gave companies NO upgrade path - Buy the new Alpha AND recompile your software and voila, you can upgrade. DEC was also duped by its competitors when it when with OSF1 and mach. EVERYONE ELSE said they would go that way - and no one else did. Ultrix/MIPS to OSF1/Alpha was NOT an upgrade, but a completely separate path - so most companies said, "Gee, the amount of work to port to OSF1/Alpha is the same as to port to Solaris/Sparc or HPUX/PARISC - so why go with DEC?". THIS is what killed DEC and by association, the Alpha.

"Intel needs to design a middle-ground processor to cover the wide semantic gap between IA32 and IA64."

Umm, the Itanium HAS an IA32 "core". It uses the IA64 registers and such to accomplish the computation - but it DOES execute IA32 instructions. Other than this one feature, the Itanium is a "stripped down" PA-RISC chip.
