That WOULD be the case
20 years AGO, when Intel should have been working on a VLIW / 'epic' architecture and AFTER having devised a smooth transition path out of their flat-foot x86 ISA. It didn't happen and Intel suffers at this point.

The problem is not that Itanium has no future or place in modern computing, but that Intel is so much used to the profits from the mass-volume market that they have NO patience to do the right thing.

Alpha was an excellent processor for its time but it seems that Itanium is following the same trajectory. As a matter of fact, DEC had devised a more solid transition plan from their VAX CISC to the Alpha RISC. But they failed and DEC closed down. Intel can survive Itanium but there should decide to stay in or th long run.


Intel needs to design a middle-ground processor to cover the wide semantic gap between IA32 and IA64. This is the future, and not the investment in keeping IA 32 on life support.
