The sad reality is that
x86 is still appearing to be a more viable chip for the lower and middle servers. This implies that people will have to CONTINUE dealing with this tall pile of hap-hazzard 'extensions' accumulated over 25 years. This IS really sad. I hope that Itanium will stay around long enough to maintain the pressure on IBM and SUN to continue improving their micro-processors. And keep their prices down.

Why Intel? Why? How will people get disentangled from this x86 dynosaurus? Didn't we have enough of segmented memory addressing and extended memory modes and ALL this mess of contorted 16/32/64 bit crap?

x86 + MS is like the fast-food of computing. The longer you use the more permanent the damage.
