Market size
While x86 servers constitute the vast majority of shipments, they are about half of the total server revenue. There are many dollars in the market ($20B) for midrange and high end servers which Itanium can capture to gain market share and revenue against SUN SPARC, IBM Power and mainframe as well as PA-RISC and MIPS. The transition of servers from x86 (even extended to 64-bits) will be a long process with years of both x86 and Itanium as major contenders for revenue market share, not just unit count. It is proprietary RISC that can't be saved over the longer term.
