As for virtualization, with Dell and HP stating that they were NOT going to continue to build 8+ processor machines, just how usefull are virtual servers on a 4 processor box? You won't save much by eliminating 3 single-processor machines, since they are MUCH cheaper than a 4 processor box. Virtualization ONLY makes sense on many CPU boxes - such as 32 or 64+ CPUs - not on 4 processor boxes.

Virtualization can be useful on a single-processor box. What is more important to the overall utility is CPU utilization. If you have a box that has the CPU sitting idle even 30% of the time, adding a virtual server that utilizes the "free" CPU cycles makes sense economically. I agree that virtualization provides more benefit with more processors, but it isn't useless even on a one processor box.
