At LAST cross competition between cable/tel co's
At LAST! The communications infrastructure to homes and businesses was lacking very seriously behind, being at least 15 years backward.

Telephone companies could be charging for a really primitive service over the common tp wiring. And all the cable companies could charge an arm and a leg and a ... for their basic cable service. It is nice that these two industries can compete against each other and provide recent products in REASONABLE prices!

Fiber has been installed in the backbone of telecommunications infrastructure since several years ago. As a matter of fact there is PLENTY of unused BW in the backbones even with today's explosive use of the Internet and telephone services. The culprit was the aging and seriously out of date office to home connectivity that was designed when 3KHz bandwidth was good enough, for tel. conversation that is.

This is really great news:

1. Homes and organizations will get much higher BWs at much reduced prices;

2. At the same time the backbone limits may get exceeded again causing demand for more BW in the backbone.

3. Applications that used to require high BW will now become possible at an affordable cost == that is unless greed kreeps in == so people could work or do other things more productively at home.

Nevertherless, this is good news and I hope that it will play out for the benefit of all.
