DR was small too
Last time I noticed figures for the two companies (it was in a magazine, like maybe Kilobaud or Byte), both were right at $40 million in sales. Just in different businesses. Digital did the OS, while MS concentrated on languages, with Basic being the principal product. Recall also, at least from contemporary accounts, that IBM went to MS first, as Gates' mother knew an IBM VP from some charity work, and was initially referred to DR (Gates reputedly called Kildal, urging him to talk to the IBMers).
