duty-cycle throttling, clock modulation, voltage modulation, functional units with lower-power states and now multiple cores with independent power states. wow, how imaginative, Intel. in all cases, Intel wants to dissipate less power when the computer is idle in some way.

nothing wrong with that. but what about when the computer is not idle? after all, we buy computers precisely for that purpose.

ironically, if Intel had a handle on their full-on power dissipation, people would realize that they don't need a 3.0 GHz P4 on their desktop. oops! it's easy to see why Intel doesn't want this.
