Solaris is a mature OS and
plays really well with other UNIX or UNIX-like OSs. You may, for instance, have different file systems cross mounted off of any and onto any box. Solaris is a SUS system (open group standard) and it has no problem talking to other systems. It can even get or export files systems based on windows.

You may think you get locked in to solaris but it plays really well with the rest of the machines. You are free to develop on any platform fits your needs and your budget all the while machines are nice to each other.

Other nice things in Solaris is the fact that it is very scalable, realiable and manageable.

Compared to a UNIX kernel, the Linux one is still in its early stages. Linux has more impetous with applications and the fact that it runs on ANYTHING makes it ofcourse very nice.
