Mike,

Let me ask you something: what was your uptime on your mission critical business applications this year (And I'm not referring to the Windows Media Player installed on your servers)? Don't know? I can't say I'm surprised. Don't have any business critical applications? Fine, stay with the Microsoft 'upgrade path'.

Just because Solaris has for many years been a far more stable, secure and easily maintainable platform than anything Bill Gates has ever dreamt of, does not in any way make it a "legacy application".

I'd be interested to know what you mean by "this environment", and especially "real talent". I'm assuming here that you realise that the ability to point and click doesn't make your IT staff talented and knowledgeable (perhaps I'm assuming too much).

My guess is "this CIO" wouldn't want to (or be able to) drive a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce because "it's a stick shift - that's legacy technology!".

I'm also intrigued as to what you mean by "Sun should get into the Windows space", and I'm sure that the strategists at Sun are on the edges of their seats too. You can expect an announcement from Sun next week: "Sun's new strategy: We are getting into the Windows space".
