Then Itanium will die...
If Intel doesn't eventually migrate the Itanium architecture to the desktop, then it will die due to lack of development effort. The only way to avoid that scenario is for it's performance benefits to far outweigh it's cost. The platoform with best bang for the buck will drive development. Remeber the i960?
