RE: Microsoft hates it...
>So, no suprise that Microsoft will fight by leveraging the desktop. They can not compete straight up.

Actually, I got the exact opposite impression. Because computer sales are decreasing and people tend not to upgrade to new OSes, etc., MS is leveraging the popularity of the X-Box to keep the need for new versions of the desktop.

>The only problem is Sony has a lot of advantages of its own here, including the installed base.

While that is definitely true today (Sony's numbers are destroying what both MS and Nintendo have out there,) that's not necessarily going to be true tomorrow. This industry tends to eat it's leaders alive... just look at what happened to Atari (at least the name is still alive) and Sega... both had the market cornered at one time. Nintendo's next in line as their popularity, at least in the console market, is definitely fading (no one's going to touch them in the handheld market for a while.) Sooner or later Sony's going to be in that elite group. I don't know who will replace them as king. Maybe MS, maybe someone else.

In a side note I found the following quote by Xbox executive Ferroni a little ironic:

"But as soon as you get into the reality of it, you lose the magic of the console--the fact that it always works. By having a platform with a single manufacturer--that allows you to guarantee that it always, always works."

Hasn't that been Apple's argument all along?
