Wait for Itanium? IBM PowerPC G5 is ready right now.
How could Intel possibly imagine that anyone has time to wait for them to perfect the incompatible (with x86) Itanium when they can march right across the street to the equally incompatible 64-bit IBM G5 PowerPC processor? Intel has maintained its deathgrip on the market precisely because the market is married to the x86 software that only runs on x86 machines. Who wants a floundering x86 processor with its teaspoon sized performance improvements when they can have a 64-bit g5 processor that has never stopped to look back? And if you want a 64-bit G5 PowerPC, why would you wait for an Itanium? Intel must be out of its mind.
