Wishful thinking on Intel's part
Even Intel does not want to invest long term in the x86 processor, AMD does and it is in their long term interest to see that it continues to be a viable instruction set. The longer that Intel lives in denial, the more potential business slips away. Instead of expecting people to purchase new software or tolerate inadequate performance from software emulation, support the x86 64 bit instruction set in the hardware of the Itanium. Perhaps until a major amount of software has been ported over to the Itanium it might require the sacrifice of an extra CPU core for the IA64 code, but it gives a decent upgrade path.

People can recite all of the eloquent high tech techno-babble they want about how one hardware platform is superior over another but at the end of the day the end users don't give a rat's *ss which processor is in their server, they care about the software that runs on those servers and that is why people do not care about the Itanium; even in big iron land.
