The problem with firewire ...
is that the chipsets are simply more expensive than USB chipsets. Is it superior? Absolutely. Firewire is a modern day incarnation of SCSI, the proven, industrial strength solution that has endured for years in enterprise level applications. But, as such, it is still the most expensive way to go, and more expensive solutions simply don't make it in the marketplace. USB is a hacked ethernet type solution and as such it benefits from the fact that ethernet is designed to be dirt cheap from the ground up.

I have two PCs that have onboard firewire, but I have literally no firewire enabled devices. Why? Because they cost from 25% to 50% more for the exact same device and the USB devices work well enough in most cases. I am simply not going to pay for quality that I can get along without. And I think you will find that that is a typical consumer sentiment. So if those companies promoting firewire really want to increase their sales, they need to find a way to lower the price of the chipsets rather than whining about Intel.

Don't get me wrong. Intel has engaged in monopolistic practices in the past and I am sure they are doing questionable stuff now. ALL the big companies tend to 'do it because they can'. But when it comes to firewire v USB, there are other factors involved. Firewire promoters are their own worst enemies.
