Seems to me
While I agree with your post in large part, the statement below I have issue with.

"USB2 is an inferior technology that Intel made ubiquitous by putting it on every motherboard, forcing FireWire to be an extra-cost item."

Intel certainly makes a number of Motherboards and, with it's chipset specifications, influences the manufacture of most others for the PC market, but there are a number of other makers. Firewire can be a default item an the MB's of any of these manufacturers.

Additionally, digital video camara's have used FW for years now, so there has been plenty of market pressure to adopt the technology. It just seems to be more of a niche player. Video editors will likely continue to use FW and FW devices, but for most of us, while it may be slightly inferior, USB2 is good enough for now. When mice, keyboards and small flash memory devices are the most commom uses of this kind of technology for most of us, the higher data transfer rates of FW are irrelevant at this point.

In short, I believe that FW is a superior technology, and maybe because of that, it has relegated itself to the top tier market where USB2 can have a broader appeal across the spectum.

As to Intel, to get back on topic for a moment, I would like to see contracts like these that create exclusivity and lock out competition made illegal. I would include in that, BTW, some of MS's contracts where discounts are given to OEM's not on volume of MS units sold, but on the basis of every end user PC sold has a MS Windows license sold with it. If your circuitry or code cannot win you the market, your lawyer should not be able to tie it up for you. Win on merit!
