You assume he knew what quagmire stood for (his spelling of it as 'quigmire' was a clue). We may never know because it was the typical hit and run from the usual suspects wink

I agree with your points re cost but would clarify that there were really no reason to replace the apps because it ran those in emulation mode. I hope the cost premium goes away (per the article) as it would pose serious competition for risc alternatives in the high end. For the mid to low end, it's all over for Itanium. It's going to be an X86 world for another 30 years.. sad

I would agree that credit goes to AMD! They did not have the capability to create an advanced architecture so they did the next best thing - add 64 bits to the X86 dinosaur and the rest is history. The industry went the easy route with native compatability with X86 apps instead of emulation. However, the burden is we all suffer for the rest of eternity with the crappy and legacy burdened X86 ISA. Oh well, perhaps Itanium will creep it's way back down over time to unleash it's advanced VLIW/EPIC architecture for all - not just super computers.
