Agree..good point
You bring up a good point about Itanium is only produced by Intel so in theory, that makes it proprietary. My point was there are several vendors competing at the server level (albeit all based on Itanium) whereas IBM has a vertical stack of it's own CPU, own chipset, own OS (AIX), own server group and own services business that would only (now) promote Power implementations. Contrast that to HP, NEC,... that pick and choose horizonal SW layers and implement standard building blocks like chipsets from multiple players.

Your point is a valid one, however.
