Intel is also "propraietary"... since they been keeping their patents and not allowing AMD or Transmeta into their architecture.

That's what everybody does.

On the other hand you seem to forget that IBM and Motorola manufatures or uzsed to manufacture and design Power processors. So it makes "less proprietary" than Intel.

Think a bit. In addition to that RISC is a natural performer for servers rather than CISC.

Everybody who does R&D - and IBM does that a whole bulk putting their money - has "proprietary". Others only follow the crowd.

Silicon Graphics, NEC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Unisys and Hewlett-Packard follow or create the crowd only.

Ohhh and by the way trust me on that as I was emploee of one of those companies you listed. I had some brief overview what was happening from inside.
