Licensing
Regarding your other point about AMD saving humanity from the $1000 Intel CPU...... AMD chips are based on licensed Intel X86 technology - 'nuff said.

Yes and no. The AMD chips perform all the x86 functions, but they don't use the same technology to get there. If they did, then AMD chips would perform as poorly as Intel's. The last time that AMD and Intel used the same technology to make chips was back when AMD was making 486 processors.

One thing you forgot to mention is that Intel's EM64T extensions are copies of AMD extensions acquired through those same licenses that AMD and Intel agreed to all those years ago.

The reason AMD can't sell more is that they have already sold all the Opterons into their existing Athlon user base !! That's why the share is the same as it was 5 years ago !!

The reason is more likely that AMD's fabs are running flat out, and can't make chips any faster. Let us not also forget that consumers in general are sheep, and have been programmed to believe that Intel is the only processor manufacturer.
