The whole story...
This may have been previously mentioned, and if it has, this of this as a reiteration...

"Microsoft has plans to deliver a 64-bit version of its Windows XP operating...Once that software is available, consumers will be able to make the step up to 64 bits."

Consumers will only have to wait IF THEY WANT TO USE WINDOWS. There are already 64-bit OSes available for the consumer market (Linux & BSD). There have been 64-bit processors around for a while (ALPHA, SPARC, MIPS, & POWER), this is just the first time they've been geared toward the consumer market. Windows may have a majority in the consumer market, but it never has, is not, and never will be the only option for consumers. Unfortunately, it's news stories like these that help to feed the notion that Windows is the only option.
