You know little of WMA
WMA format doesn't take any less space than mp3's. You probably lowered the bitrate of wma files, which you can also do to mp3s if you wanted. MS came out lying that wmas at lower bitrate was superior to mp3s at higher bitrate. This is not true as all they've really done was to use volume booster to make their music louder. But all subtle sounds are lost as any file encoded at lower bitrate. That's why many audiophiles consider wmas inadequate. Volumes are meant to be controlled by a media player.

WMAs are absolultely superior to MP3 at the same bitrate. Anyone that does A/B tests on the same source material can tell you that. Volume boosting has nothing to do with it.

Variable bitrate WMAs are by far the best quality for the storage space between MP3 and WMA. AAC is also very nice, but not as widely supported.

The device that you move your music around on (if you go portable) may dictate WMA, MP3, or some other format.

Personally, I rip all my CDs at the second highest variable WMA setting. I did that after (literally!) a couple of hours listening to ripped material that I am VERY familiar with, and that shows the weakness of lossy audio compression. High quality headphones are essential for selecting your audio format and compression rate. Listening to the exact same few seconds of carefully chosen audio at every bitrate, then repeating with another selection, can get you good results.
