re: why
>Why do we need another proprietary format like ACC? Why does Apple have to create their own?

There is some misconception about this. AAC is not an Apple proprietary format. It is MPEG-4 audio and Apple selected it for tracks it sells over the iTunes music store. The only thing proprietary associated with the file may be Apple's fairplay DRM scheme, but I don't think that's associated with the file itself, but rather the iTunes application (the info probably carries over to the iPod as well.)

>Why does MS have to create their own?

Good question

>It doesn't really matter. The point is that these file formats exist already and are widely used...hence, if Apple wanted to create a fully user-friendly application they should include the ability to handle these types of formats.

I can kind of see that argument, and I kind of can't. I'm sure they could have made iTunes for Windows support WMA files (at least from a 'play' standpoint,) but then there would some issues with the iPod needing that same support, but that wouldn't play well with the Mac version of iTunes (of which I am certain there would be some issues with MS if Apple tried to include WMA support in OS X.)

It would nice if they included the ability to play WMAs, but I can understand the conflicts and issues they'd have to deal with if they did.
