Almost a good idea
but wouldn't it be cheaper to offer the CHOICE on bootup? This way, they could pressure MS on the pricing. Here is my idea:

On initial boot, you have the option of installing either Windows XP or Novell Desktop. If the user selects Windows XP they get the standard release at that time. If the choose the Novell Destop they get the current NLD release PLUS the one year of free support from Novell.

This would surely spur competition and force MS to lower their prices to the level of the NLD (currently $50) which would probably be lowered through an agreement with HP.

There is no need for HP to develop anything, thereby reducing R&D in that area. I can envision a sub $400 PC like that.
