Dirty little secrets
"So far, I haven't heard a good explanation (or even a bad one) for why information technology shouldn't be built around the idea ..."

Truth be told, companies with large numbers of computers, usually have many different organizations. These organizations have slightly different configurations and applications. In order to commonize across the enterprise, empires must be destroyed and concensus must be gained.

Here's a simple example: Department A develops application A. Since there are NO STANDARDS on where to locate itself, application A selects a directory "name space" in a vacuum. The code resides HERE and the data resides THERE. Now project this to 100 departments and 100 applications! In order to create a grid to service these apps, you need to have access to certain files and directories i.e. you need to replicate ALL of them to "gridize" your apps. But since they ALL are located in slightly different name spaces, its a nightmare to replicate them all.

Something as simple as "All apps will reside in their own directories under /apps/" is totally ignored by CIOs and coders alike. THis is akin to Chaos theory and sensitivity to input conditions. If a butterfly in China flaps its wings and creates storms over the US, a coder A that creates his app under /app/app1, and another coder B that creates his app under /opt/app2 will NEVER become compatable on a grid. D*MN SIMPLE.
