Will take much more than standards and Open Source
Standards and Open Source are good, but it will take much more than that to make grid flourish. Grid fundamentally doesn't work for most applications which are I/O intensive. It's hard enough trying to get most clusters to scale even if they have gigabit interconnects. Never mind what happens over a T1 line. The other problem is cost. Who wants to pay for monthly service when you can own the equipment out right for just 3 months of service?

Grid is just new clothing for the old ASP (Application Service Provider) craze of the dot com era with a massively distributed processing twist. Only problem is, ASPs never made financial sense and distributed processing doesn?t scale well due to lack of bandwidth.
