Glitch in the idea? Sometimes an idea patented takes years to have a practical use.

As for Alpha and "HP killing it" that's not how it reads to me.

Compaq sold the intellectual property for the Alpha line, and much of the design team to Intel before the merger with HP. Intel already had the fab for Alpha chips since'97(?).

Don't know for sure if Intel owns the patents (IP sounds like it), but Intel is making the Alpha and HP is using it. At least until 2005 (?) according to press announcements.

Re: HP supporting more than one chip. If you disallow legacy units, currently still in production units include x86, IA-64, PA-RISC and Alpha. PA-RISC is pretty much HP's own.

Re: Itanium. Since HP was and is part of the Itanium design team, it makes sense to use their own CPU.

Re: Own or control. I'm sure there are cross-licensing agreements amd I suspect they're complex. Many HP-UX binaries are listed as "compatible" on PA-RISC & Itanium2.

Of course one could speculate why the Alpha IP was sold before the merger, or what would have happened if Q/DEC/HP had merged before Itanium hit the market, but would we ever really know?
