In the case of developers they are not selling the software they created they are selling the right for you to use that software according to their terms.

Try reading copyright laws. You buy software. Simple as that. I don't know where people like you come up with this stuff. The creator has no more rights content they sell than you have. Both the creator and the customer MUST abide by the laws in place, those being copyright laws. Now as a creator I can sell you my software and along with that software I can give you a license to copy that software X number of times. Of course to copy my software you must agree to my terms.

You do own the software. You can hack the crap out of it if you want. You mod it if you want, assuming you know enough to do so. I know many gamers who do exactly this. So yes, you can use however you like.
