Sorry, Cell won't stop piracy...
It seems like piracy, digital rights maangement, copy protection, and intellectual property is entering into every topic these days. Everything, from "Trusted Computing" to Cell, seems to be billed to stop piracy but we all know in the end that the pirates won't be stopped.

For example, the processor locking out memory won't stop someone from replacing the memory chips on the motherboard and replacing them with dual-ported versions that allow a user to snoop at the contents of memory-- regardless of the CPU's protection.

You don't think that this can be done? Well, its already been done to circumvent the X-Box. Everything from encrypted busses, signature checks in software, and hardware locks-- can, have, and will get broken, often without as much difficulty as the designers of DRM anticipated.

The old adage, "We're not trying to stop the dedicated hacker, just the regular clueless user", doesn't hold water when knowledge and software is spread globally about any hacks, legal or otherwise. I've heard it plenty-- "we're only keeping honest people honest", "we're only trying to stop garage or 'ant' piracy"-- are just admissions that you cannot throw a technological answer to a social or behavioral issue.
