- I have also been doing this for years.
-
It started five years ago when the property owner's association for my neighborhood wanted to get more use from the community center. A computer lab for the kids was suggested, but the cost was prohibitive. I suggested people donate old computers and I would refurbish and set them up. Before long, we had 20 computers available. They are all currently running Red Hat Linux 9, with a cable internet connection. Everyone loves it, and my dues to the association have been waived in exchange for my ongoing services!
I have since done the same thing at a couple of churches in town and for a number of ladies who run day-care facilities in their homes. Also at two shelters for women (usually with children) seeking to escape abusive relationships. One of the churches was so happy with the performance and stability of the computers in the lab, they contracted me to switch their whole system to Linux.
I give computers to individuals, too. Friends of friends, co-worker's families, etc. People who I know will put it to good use and cannot afford to buy one. A large percentage of these go to Spanish-speaking families, and I install Linux in Spanish for them.
