I actually know a few people running 64 bit on their desktops
One is still running his WinXP64 for AMD that MS did release as an OEM product but then discontinued as it was crapola. So he doesn't have any 64 bit apps but his OS can support them (if you call WinXP64 an OS and you use the term 'support' loosely).

The others are all running desktop Linux with some 64bit apps and some 32bit apps. One of them uses source and rewrites code to compile as 64bits --which can be quite a task. I think he has done three apps so far, two successfully. I don't know if he actively works with these projects to do 64bit ports but I get the imression that he doesn't --waste of talent.

Nevertheless, My new computer coming late February will be AMD Athlon64 running Gentoo Linux 2005.1 64-bit kernel 2.6.x. I will use as many 64-bit apps they have including FGFS and The GIMP.

AMD is irrelevant? Just because all of the large distributors --Dell, HP, IBM, Gateway-- have exclusive Intel contracts and they bought out the biggest AMD resellers --HP bought Compaq, Gateway bought eMachine-- does not make them irrelevent. All the independents are running and selling AMD because they give the best Bang for the buck. They only sell Intel for the uninformed who come in and request it.

AMD is faster, more stable, cooler, greener and less expensive than any comprable Intel Model. I use the term 'comprable' loosely. Intel can never compare to AMD. 3DNow! runs circles around SSE2, PowerNow! runs circles around SpeedStep, hyperTransport & parallel pipelines runs circles around HyperThreading, ...should I go on?

Their share is down? When was their share ever more? Now let's remember that we are talking here of x86 processors. This may be one of their lowest gains but it is a gain that puts them at their highest share, is it not?

The 64bit hype? You must mean the MS WinXP64 hype. The WinXP64 hype has run its course --a long time ago-- but anyone serious about running 64bit apps or OS on x86 was always talking Linux/BSD on AMD64 and they still are.

You must be Bernie, right?

P.S., Don't talk dual core x86 and Intel in the same breath when AMD is way ahead of the game. Let's talk dual core 64bit CPU's and, if you like, we can keep the PowerG5 out of it and still restrict to x86. You can wait for your stable, dual core Intel 32-bit for 2006/2007, I will wait for my stable, dual core AMD 64-bit 90nm SOI for 2H 2005.
