64 bits or brain cells in your case
It really depends on what you are calling a "consumer desktop". HP, Sun and IBM workstations have been 64 bit for years, and thus most all CAD/CAM applications run in this space. One of the longest running dramas in my company has been the "Windoze workstation', whereby the UNIX workstations would be replaced by Windoze ones. This has been an annual ritual for as long as I have been an UNIX admin.. Each time it is looked at, it is rejected because 3.5Gb of memory is just not enough for CAD/CAM today (some assemblies can be >20Gb). This AMD 64 processor would allow M$ to finally have a platform for their operating system that could handle large graphics files (CAD/CAM). Who knows, after 12 years+, maybe M$ could beat out the UNIX guys. OTOH they DO have a 12 year head start . . .
