I have it a cable DVR....
My cable company - Bright House - which used to be Time Warner - rolled out a DVR about 6 months ago when I was seriously looking at TiVo.

The TiVo was about $300 or so to buy and a subscription fee of over $10 per month if I remember correctly. But the cable company only wanted only $5 per month with one time charge of $8 to install it. They just replaced my set top box with a new one (I think Pioneer makes it) and it works fantastic. It holds about 50 hours or so of video.

The two big advantages of this system besides the obvious cost is 1) I don't own it so as the capabilities of these recorders goes up and the prices come down, I haven't sunk a bunch of money into something that will be a dinosaur in two or three years and 2) the menu system is provided by the cable company - through the cable not a phone line - and is fairly seamless to operate.

Also I don't have an extra box of electronics cluttering my shelf around my TV. I don't think I would want to be owning a lot of TiVo stock right now.
