tic: More questions
But a lot of businessmen are just as ruthless. The difference is, once your company reaches a certain point, that ruthlessness morphs into illegal behavior. Until it was ruled that Microsoft had a monopoly, Gates was 'merely' a hard-nosed businessman, no different from many others. If Microsoft had established a partnership with Apple, shipping MS software on Apple hardware, would Microsoft have become the dominant force it is today? And would Gates et al. have been satisifed with that position instead of the one they now hold?

By going with generic hardware with no dominant player, Microsoft was able to control the direction of the PC platform. If Apple hardware were as pervasive as 'generic' PC hardware is now, could Microsoft have been in such a dominant position?
