---Was Microsoft seduced by success, or was Microsoft already planning for a monopoly---

I don't know if they were planning a monopoly, but Gates always showed a certain ruthlessness in his business dealings--look at how badly he worked over Apple in the article in question, or think about how badly he abused IBM. Someone that crafty and driven would probably have continued to push, regardless of the situation.
