Yes. AMD makes the Opteron chip, which is what the Athlon64 chip is modeled after. Many server makers, including HP and Sun already sell servers with Opteron chips.

Opterons scale much better than Intel's X86 based (Xeon) server chips, and they wipe the floor with Intel in many database/server benchmarks.

But that's not the point of posters above. The Itanium has a completely different design from the Xeon and AMD64 chip, and this require all of the software to be completely rewritten/recompiled in order for it to work like it should. With the proper software in place, an Itanium server can make both the Opteron and Xeon based servers look like cheap calculators.

The adoption of AMD64 and 64bit WIndows systems will not help Itanium one bit because they are completely different processor architectures.
