Contracts are scams and ways to get over
Once your two years are up, you are told you qualify for a new phone for free or at a greatly reduced price. However, you take that free phone and you have just tacitly renewed your contract and locked yourself in for two more years.

I made the "Can you hear me now?" people unhappy because when I wanted a newer phone, I went to eBay and purchased one with their logo. Under the federal regs, they had to accept and activate it to my number (and since it didn't come from them, no contract lock).

Always a way to get around "The Man."
