- Cell phone - utility or consumer good?

The problem is the treatment of cell phones and cell phone service as a consumer good by the wireless companies. This allows the wireless companies to offer various features and services, but also allows them to do all of these things with an eye towards maximizing profit, at the expense of what's best for consumers and the cell phone industry as a whole.
Consumers are best served by cell phone service being treated as a utility - ensuring standards, portability, and a consistency to basic features and service.
