I am not an American but I'm sure that the service providers in the states do the same things as here in Canada.

I got my phone for nothing. BMC handed me a phone for free. It doesn't do much, but I didn't buy it to play games or dance the tango. The fact of the matter is that Bell gave me a phone for free, and all of the providers do that. They will give you a free phone, or take a phone that is actually worth six or seven hundred dollars and sell it for two or three.

If they had to sell phones that people could use on other networks they would have to charge a hell of a lot more for them.

As for making a phone that works on CDMA as well as GSM, sounds like a great idea, until you realize the phone is bigger than your head, is likely to catch fire, and will go through batteries in a matter of hours.
