But maybe if America stopped playing the economic nationalism card, cutting off Chinese imports to protect American companies, China might stop playing the same game, putting up hurdles in the way of foreign IT products?

China is doing this because they have a fast growing market of 1.3 billion people. If China can set the standards, it will likely become a GLOBAL standard. The best way to make them not do that is to show that America, at the peak of its economic power, won't do that to other countries.

We don't have much time to set such an example. In 20 years (if not less), China will be the most important economy in the world, based on sheer size and as a percentage of exports for countries around the world.
