Poor Itanium ....
Opps, the 64-bit processor business isn't as easy as one might thought. It almost brought SUN to bankrupcy and so far only IBM seems to be able to pull it off. Ofcourse lowly AMD is still hanging out and it is doing well in its niche.

The question what's going to be the next 64-bit platform. Power 5 is well established and respected and Itanium seemed to be the next best. Now Intel needs to make clear what are their long term plans on 64 bit processors. The x86-64 quigmire cannot continue for too long. 64-bit desktops / 'servers' are OK but their life time is limited by the cantankerous x86 ISA. Maybe SUN Ultra will start rising again.
