Seems to be part of a larger trend...
Unfortunately, there seems to have been a sea change in business in this country. It seems to have begun with the ascendency of the MBA during the 80's with the arbitrage frenzy that loaded down all of our major industries with unnecessary debt in order to achieve "synergies" (in other words, the abilty to lay people off). The focus of business seems to have shifted from providing competitive products and services to customers to meeting "street expectations" in order to pump the stock price. It seems that we are observing the end of free markets in the name of Free Markets which are really command-economy monopolies and oligolopolies. I suspect (and hope) that the communications revolution will render these corporate monsters obsolete as it is doing to the recording industry. The problem that they have is that their most profitable product (the CD with 1 or 2 good songs) has been rendered obsolete by technology. Customers are finding a way to get what they have always wanted -- single songs, since the recording industry has abandoned their customers when they discontinued selling singles at a reasonable cost. I recall buying 45's as a teenager, and it represented the majority of popular music sales. After a move to the LP in the late '60s and 70's when you really could get a full album of music you liked, the recording industry touted the CD as the "new way" to purchase music. It cost them less to make, but they charged more for it. Now that consumers have realized the advantages of digital music, they want to pull the plug.

Just dumb in my opinion. None of these efforts do anything to increase sales of products that people don't want to buy at the price they are offered. Econ 101, anyone?
