"kid downloading songs" IS threat RIAA
The American (or Western European) kid downloading songs instead of pestering his parents to buy him albums is the threat. He is threatening the bottom line of the RIAA?s membership.

Like software and pharmaceutical companies, music and video companies realize that most of the 3rd world can?t afford to pay American prices for their products. The solution let these poor countries buy at a discount. The few persons who can afford to purchase an authentic original of an item, everyone else buys a cheap knock off or copy, but wishes they could afford to own an original. This gives the company international brand recognition which is often as valuable as the few cents they could have extracted from these poor people.

The problem comes when Americans become content with the knock offs, why are so many name brand clothes made in China? Because if they aren?t the Chinese will just flood our market with low priced knock offs and Americans will buy them. Why, because with only a minor loss in quality, they can have the item they desire much cheaper than buying a name brand original. The quality is high enough to satisfy the needs of joe average, therefore only those who get some personal satisfaction out of knowing they own a ?genuine? item are willing to pay the extra for a brand name original. The same is true with music, if Americans are satisfied with the quality of bootleg albums and MP3s and can get them at a significantly lower price this is a threat to the RIAA..

Thus it is in fact the American kid who is satisfied with the quality of his downloaded music and is no longer willing to pay the premium price for an ?original? copy that threatens the RIAA.
