The Itanium is not a consumer CPU.
This may change with the release of Windows 2010 server, but I agree that, for now, the general public does not need Itanium or most of the 64 bit CPUs.

The same numbers used on the Pentium family do not need to apply to the Itanium exacly in the same way. The G5 and the Ultra Sparc CPU's do not ship in nearly the same numbers as the Pentium family and yet they are still profitable.
